101-103 George Street, Edinburgh

97-99 George Street in Edinburgh consists of three buildings that were combined into a single banking office by Robert Hurd & Partners in 1975.

Nos. 97-99 features a three-storey and attic façade designed in a pastiche Georgian style from 1975. It has a cream sandstone ashlar facing, with arcaded rustication at the ground floor, corniced windows on the first floor, a cornice and solid parapet, and a pair of dormers that balance the original building at No. 105.

Nos. 101-103 is a large three-storey, five-bay Roman palazzo designed by Kinnear & Peddie. It is made of polished cream sandstone ashlar. The ground floor has a channelled masonry arcade with bipartite windows divided by Ionic columnar mullions and entablatures in the centre three bays, along with a secondary doorway to the right framed by Ionic columns with a carved tympanum. To the left is a pedimented porch with paired Doric columns, a full triglyph frieze, and a carved tympanum. The entire structure features a stylised frieze and a dentilled cornice. The first floor has Corinthian aedicules with open balustrades, and there is a flagpole at the centre. The second floor has lugged architraved windows with a cill course. The building is topped with a heavy dentilled and modillioned cornice. The windows are timber, with fixed windows at the ground floor, casements on the first floor, and 4-pane sash and case windows on the second. The roof is piended with corniced panelled stacks and grey slates.

No. 105 was originally a three-storey and attic, three-bay house built around 1775, which was refronted at the ground and first floors in the early 19th century, possibly by William Playfair. The ground floor features a rusticated centre with panelled outer pilasters and consoles supporting a dentilled cornice. There are arched windows in the centre and left, and a former doorway to the right that has been blocked with a vending machine. The first and second floors have architraved windows, with consoled cornices at the first floor. The cornice is mutuled with a lead-covered blocking course. There are three canted piend-roofed dormers that match those at No. 97. The windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes, and the roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, there is a fine square double-height banking hall at the rear, accessed from the side. This hall features fluted Corinthian columns and is illuminated by etched windows at the rear. The ceiling is compartmented, and some original furniture remains.
