Description
4 Middleby Street, built in 1827, is a single storey and basement classical terrace of houses featuring 30 bays arranged symmetrically. It includes three 6 bay pavilion blocks with entrances at street level, two 4 bay linking blocks, and two 2 bay terminal blocks, all with entrances at the basement level. The building is constructed of cream sandstone polished ashlar, with droved stone used for the basements and rubble for the sides and rear. Architectural details include a base course, a dividing band course, panelled aprons beneath the architraved ground floor windows, a cornice and blocking course on the pavilion blocks, and a balustraded parapet on the linking and terminal blocks.
On the north (entrance) elevation, the 6 bay blocks feature steps leading to doorways in the outer bays, with panelled doors and circular pattern fanlights. Fluted Doric columns support the corniced doorpieces, while single windows are present in the remaining bays on both the ground floor and basement. The 4 bay blocks have basement doorways in the central bays with boarded doors and small paned fanlights, and regular fenestration in the flanking bays and above on the ground floor. The 2 bay blocks also have basement doorways in the terminal bays, with regular fenestration in the other bays.
The windows are 12 pane timber sash and case style. The roofs are covered with grey slate and feature piended designs on the platform-roofed linking blocks, with coped wallheads and ridge stacks.
The boundary walls include a low coped wall along Middleby Street and higher walls along Duncan and Minto Street, which incorporate pedestrian gates to the south. Original cast-iron railings are present in the areas. The interiors were not seen in 1996.
