Description

62, 64, and 66 Broughton Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement, six-bay plain classical terraced tenement designed by Thomas Bonnar between 1829 and 1834. The building features polished ashlar sandstone at the principal floor, with broached ashlar on the upper floors and basement. It has a base course, a band course between the basement and principal floor, a cornice at the principal floor, a corniced frieze at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The principal floor has recessed windows with panelled aprons, architraved windows on the first floor, and projecting cills on the second floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, there are recessed doorpieces with former two-leaf, four-panel timber doors and rectilinear-design rectangular fanlights in the bay to the right of centre, as well as in the outer left and right bays at the principal floor. The door to the outer left has glazed panels. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows, with the cill lowered in the penultimate bay from the left. The upper floors and basement have regular fenestration, with basement doors in the penultimate bays from the left and right. There is a flagged basement area.

The northwest elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (68-76 Broughton Street), as does the southeast elevation (56-60 Broughton Street). The rear elevation was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof. Broached ashlar ridge stacks are coped and have circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1998, but there is evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and pineapple balusters.
