Description

68, 70, 72, 74, 76 Broughton Street is a terraced tenement building designed by Thomas Bonnar between 1829 and 1834. It is a four-storey structure with a basement, featuring six bays in a plain classical style. The principal floor is finished in polished ashlar sandstone, while the upper floors and basement are constructed with broached ashlar. The building has a base course, a band course between the basement and the principal floor, a cornice at the principal floor, a corniced frieze at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor.

The principal elevation includes recessed doorpieces with six-panel timber doors and four-pane lozenge-pattern rectangular fanlights, located in the bay to the right of centre and in the outer left and right bays at the principal floor. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows, as do the floors above, with a blind window in the penultimate bay from the right at the second floor and above. There is a modern door in the third bay from the left at the basement, accompanied by a window to the left, and a shop front consisting of a door and window in the penultimate bay from the right at the basement. The basement area is flagged.

The northwest elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (42-54 London Street), as does the southeast elevation (62-66 Broughton Street). The rear elevation was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.

The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof. Broached ashlar and rendered ridge stacks are coped and topped with circular cans. The interiors were not seen in 1998, but there is evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and pineapple finials.
