Description

56, 58, and 60 Broughton Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement, six-bay plain classical terraced tenement designed by Thomas Bonnar between 1829 and 1834. The building features polished ashlar sandstone at the principal floor, with broached ashlar on the upper floors and basement. It has a base course, a band course between the basement and principal floor, and cornices at the principal and second floors, along with a cornice and blocking course at the third floor. The principal floor has recessed windows with panelled aprons, while the first floor has architraved windows and the second floor features projecting cills. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.

On the northeast elevation, there are recessed doorpieces with former two-leaf, four-panel timber doors and rectangular fanlights in the bay to the right of centre and in the outer left and right bays at the principal floor. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows with lowered cills in the bays to the left of centre. The upper floors and basement have regular fenestration. A glazed door is located in the penultimate bay from the left at the basement, which has a flagged area. A double-faced clock is suspended from a decorative wrought-iron bracket, wall-hung below the principal floor cornice, between the third and penultimate bay from the left.

The northwest elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (62-66 Broughton Street), as does the southeast elevation (50-54A Broughton Street). The rear elevation, not seen since 1998, predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and broached ashlar ridge stacks that are coped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings that have spear-headed and pineapple finials.
