Description
50 Broughton Street is a four-storey and basement, six-bay plain classical terraced tenement designed by Thomas Bonnar between 1829 and 1834, with later additions. The building features polished ashlar sandstone on the principal floor, with broached ashlar on the upper floors and basement. It has a base course, a band course between the basement and principal floor, a cornice at the principal floor, a corniced frieze at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The first floor has architraved windows, while the second floor has projecting cills. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.
On the northeast (principal) elevation, there are recessed doorpieces in the outer right bay at the principal floor, featuring a modern two-leaf eight-pane glazed door and a modern six-pane rectangular fanlight. The third bay from the right has a four-panel former two-leaf timber door with a radial rectangular fanlight, flanked by a window in the penultimate bay from the right. The rest of the principal floor consists of a pair of single-storey advanced near-mirrored two-bay shop fronts with blind returns; the left side is coped, while the right has a corniced frieze with a single decorative bracket. The outer left and right bays have modern plate glass windows, and there are recessed modern glazed doors flanking the center with glazed returns. The upper floors have regular fenestration, and the basement in the penultimate bay from the right includes a window and a four-panel door with glazed and barred upper panels, along with a flagged basement area.
The northwest elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (56-60 Broughton Street), as does the southeast elevation (42-48 Broughton Street). The rear elevation was not seen in 1998.
The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof with broached ashlar ridge stacks that are coped and have circular cans. The interiors were not seen in 1998 but there is evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and pineapple finials.
