Description
5 Wellington Place is an early 19th century, two-storey and attic, seven-bay classical tenement with a basement. It is constructed from cream sandstone, featuring droved ashlar with a polished ashlar ground floor and dressings. The building has a band course above the basement, a rusticated arcade at the ground floor, and additional band courses above the ground floor and at the first floor cill. The eaves cornice has a blocking course. The ground floor openings are round-arched with corniced imposts, and the windows are set in ashlar panels. The first floor windows are architraved, and the doorways are accessed by steps, featuring panelled doors and semi-circular plate glass fanlights.
On the southwest (front) elevation, there is a smaller doorway to the common stair at the centre, with a single window above it on the first floor. There is a short swept ashlar wallhead stack. The bays to the left and right of the centre have broader main door doorways, with single windows above. The outer bays each have single windows. To the right, there is a rectangular pedimented bipartite dormer, and to the left, a large canted tripartite dormer with a piended roof.
The northeast (rear) elevation features a semi-circular stairwell to the right and a square projection to the left. The windows are timber sash and case, mostly with plate glass glazing, and the first floor left bays and canted dormer have 12-pane windows. The roof is slate with metal flashings, and there is a coped mutual stack along with a wallhead stack that has octagonal cans.
The boundary walls and railings consist of a low boundary wall at the front made of painted stugged ashlar with saddleback coping, accompanied by a variety of plain iron railings and gates.
