Description
Alnwickhill House, built in 1890 for Robert Wilson, originally served as an Industrial Home for Fallen Women, and is now subdivided into residential houses. The main block is a two-storey and attic structure, accompanied by a range of two single-storey former industrial buildings which have also been converted into residential use. A further brick extension runs along the rear at Stanedykehead. The building is constructed of bull-faced squared and snecked red sandstone with cream polished ashlar dressings. The windows are tall timber sash and case windows with a 20-pane glazing pattern; on the main elevation, they have roll-moulded surrounds and cornices at ground level. The roof is covered in grey slates with terracotta ridge tiles and finials to the piended main block, with ashlar coped skews and tall, corniced ashlar stacks.
The east elevation displays symmetry, featuring a gabled central bay with a tripartite, round-headed doorway at ground floor, framed by a moulded surround and a string mould above. The doorway is fitted with a nine-panelled door and a small-paned fanlight. Flanking the doorway are windows at ground floor, and three further windows at first floor, with a central window featuring a round-arched pediment. The attic is punctuated by a key-blocked bull's-eye window. The composition is flanked by lower and narrower two-bay gables, each having two windows to each floor, with a blank corniced sculpture panel in the attic. Outer single bays incorporate a ground-floor window, and a first-floor window that breaks the eaves within a pedimented dormer. The north and south elevations feature advanced gabled bays; the north side has two ground-floor windows, two narrow first-floor windows, and louvred bull's-eye windows in the attic. The south gable has windows in the re-entrant angle on both ground and first floors. An ashlar coped rubble wall runs along the main road.
A long, single-storey range extends from the main block to the north, incorporating enlarged openings and roof Veluxes. This is linked by a stone wall to pyramidal-capped ashlar gatepiers defining a courtyard. Within the courtyard stands a two-storey brick piended addition to the main block, with replacement uPVC windows, and a stone single-storey cottage to the north. The carriage house, now also residential, is single-storey and attic, with a segmentally arched opening to the east that has been converted into a garage with a modern garage door. This building has pedimented dormerheads to the attic openings and 12-pane sash and case windows under a slated piended roof. Rubble boundary walls with saddleback ashlar coping edge the road to the east. Ashlar gatepiers with corniced ashlar caps mark the rear courtyard entrance.
