Description

175, 177, 179 Causewayside in Edinburgh is a classical tenement building dating from around 1835. It stands four storeys high and features twelve bays. The ground floor has shopfronts for Nos 175-179, with a pend leading to a recessed bay between Nos 169 and 173. The building is constructed of droved cream sandstone, with ashlar used for the ground floor and dressings, while the side and rear are made of rubble. It includes a base course, a band course, and cill courses for the first and fourth floor windows, topped with a cornice and blocking course. The shopfronts are painted.

On the west elevation, there are two shops on the right side at ground level, each with a window. The left shop has panelled double doors, and there is a tenement door with a tripartite fanlight situated between the shops (No 177). Additionally, there is a door in the penultimate bay to the left, which features a plate glass fanlight. The upper floors have a regular arrangement of windows, predominantly consisting of twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, with some plate glass. Notably, the single windows above the tenement door (No 177) have been made bipartite to accommodate the stairway.
