Description
15 and 15A Grange Road is a double villa built around 1860. It is a two-storey, four-bay rectangular building with a later two-storey recessed extension on the east side. The villa was subdivided into No 15 in 1955 and No 17 in 1970. The exterior features squared and snecked rubble with stugged ashlar and polished dressings on the south elevation. Notable architectural details include dividing bands, an eaves course and cornice, raised margins around unusually large first-floor windows, droved margins, chamfered reveals, quoin strips, and blind balustraded window aprons at the first floor.
On the south (entrance) elevation, the entrances are located in the second and third bays, featuring pilastered doorpieces with entablatures. No 15 has a two-leaf panelled door, while No 17 has a panelled door with lead glass upper panels and plate glass fanlights. Above the entrances are single windows, with full-height canted windows at the outer bays. There is a slightly recessed late 19th-century extension on the outer right, which has a single ground-floor window and a bipartite window that breaks the eaves at the first floor in a flat-roofed dormerhead. A corniced ashlar garage with a piend roof is formed in the pavilion wing.
The west elevation features a piend-roofed garage and service wing, which includes a secondary entrance at the ground floor. The east elevation has a single-storey flat-roofed garage attached to the extension. The north elevation has a single-storey pitched-roof mutual service wing at the center, with secondary entrances on either side. The main house has regular fenestration at both the ground and first floors.
The south elevation mainly has 12-pane and 8-pane sash and case windows, with replacement windows on the first floor of No 17. There is a mixture of 12-pane and plate glass sash and case windows elsewhere. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead flashing, along with two shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks—without cans on the west side and with moulded cans on the east.
The interiors were not seen in 1990. There is a low coped boundary wall along the street, which rises to a vehicular gateway on the east side at No 15, and a higher coped wall at No 17, along with high coped mutual boundary walls.
