Description

8 Sciennes Gardens in Edinburgh is a two-storey, three- and five-bay triple villa built around 1862. The structure is made of squared and snecked tooled sandstone rubble with polished ashlar dressings. It features a base course, long and short chamfered quoins, and overhanging timber eaves. The first-floor windows break the eaves in gabled dormerheads and have chamfered reveals with basket-arched lintels.

On the north elevation, the five bays are mirrored about the center. There is a central chamfered doorway with a cornice and stylized pediment, a panelled door, and a two-light fanlight, with a single window above on the first floor. The second and fourth bays each have single windows on both floors. The outer bays are advanced and feature gabled ends with corniced canted windows at the ground level and tripartite windows on the first floor, along with decorative blank shields set in the gableheads.

The east and west elevations are three bays mirrored about the center. Each has a central doorway similar to the north elevation, with a panelled door (the west door has glazed upper panels), a two-light fanlight, and a single window above on the first floor. The outer bays also contain single windows on each floor.

The villa has eight-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate gabled roof, corniced gableheads, and mutual stacks. It features moulded octagonal cans, scrolled skewputts, and stone corbels supporting the timber eaves of the gablets.

The interiors were not seen in 1990. The property is enclosed by a low coped rubble boundary wall and has brick mutual walls.
