5-7 Hill Street, Edinburgh

9 Hill Street in Edinburgh is a classical building designed by James Hill between 1788 and 1794, with later alterations. It consists of three storeys and an attic, featuring three bays. The building is made of droved cream ashlar sandstone with polished dressings, which has been stone cleaned. The ground floor has smaller windows with a cill course, and there is an eaves course above. The western bay and the inner bays of the mirrored pair to the east (Nos 5 and 7) have broad tripartite architraved doorways with a fluted frieze and a mutule cornice, leading to flush-panelled doors, although No 9 has its door blocked as a window. Nos 7 and 9 are topped with matching early 20th century mansard roofs, each featuring three pedimented timber dormers, while No 5 has a bipartite piend-roofed dormer.

The rear elevations are constructed of irregular coursed rubble and consist of two bays, with tripartite windows on the first floor. No 9 has a four-storey piend-roofed projecting stair tower, while No 7 has a later rendered projecting bay. The windows throughout are timber sash and case with 12 panes. The building features ashlar coped skews and stone stacks, which are rendered on the west side, topped with grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
