Description
12 Hill Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic, three-bay classical former house built between 1788 and 1794 by James Hill. The building features droved cream ashlar sandstone with some black paint partially removed and polished dressings. The front elevation has smaller windows with a cill course at the ground level and an eaves course. To the right bay, there is a broad tripartite architraved doorpiece with a fluted frieze and a mutule cornice, leading to a flush-panelled door. The roof includes a piend-roofed tripartite dormer.
The rear elevation is made of irregular rubble and consists of two storeys and an attic with two bays. It has a later projecting bay on the right and a tripartite window on the ground level to the left.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes; the ground floor features plate glass, while the first floor has secondary external glazing. The building has ashlar coped skews and stone stacks, which have been rebuilt to the east, topped with grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
