Description
8 Hill Street in Edinburgh is a pair of mirrored, classical former houses built between 1788 and 1794 by James Hill. These three-storey and attic structures feature three bays and are constructed from droved cream ashlar stone with polished dressings, which have been cleaned. The front elevation includes a cill course at the ground level and an eaves course. The doorways are framed by Roman Doric pilastered doorpieces, adorned with a fluted frieze and a single cornice above the inner bays. The doors are deep-set and flush-panelled, complemented by three-pane fanlights. Number 6 has a mansard roof with two dormers.
The rear elevation is made of rubble and consists of two storeys and an attic with two bays, featuring stair windows at the centre. The windows throughout are timber sash and case, with 12 panes each. The building is topped with ashlar coped skews and covered in grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
