Description
2 Hill Street in Edinburgh is a pair of classical former houses built between 1788 and 1794 by James Hill. These three-storey and attic buildings feature three bays and are constructed from droved cream ashlar with polished dressings. The front elevation has a cill course at the ground level and an eaves course. The inner bays have architraved corniced doorpieces with fluted friezes, plate glass fanlights, and deep-set doors, with No 4 having flush-panelled doors. No 2 has a blind window at the center of the second floor and a pair of piend-roofed dormers, while No 4 has a mansard roof with three dormers.
The gable is made of irregular coursed rubble and includes windows to the left, along with a later bay to the south. The rear elevation is two-storey and attic with two bays, featuring a projecting bay to the right.
The buildings have timber sash and case 12-pane windows, with plate glass on the ground and first floors of No 2. The roofs are finished with ashlar coped skews, stone stacks, and grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
