Edinburgh Corn Exchange, 11 New Market Road, Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Corn Exchange, located at 11 New Market Road in Edinburgh, was designed by James A Williamson, the City Superintendent of Works, in 1909. This building features a symmetrical rectangular-plan corn exchange hall with aisles, constructed from pink coursed bull-faced sandstone complemented by contrasting cream sandstone dressings. It has a steel roof structure.

The northeast elevation has 11 bays arranged in a 3-5-3 grouping, with an eaves cornice and parapet. The architraved windows are set in raised panels with aprons. A five-bay loggia supported by four Roman Doric columns is present, with a central doorway behind it featuring two-leaf glazed doors and a plaque above. There are single windows in two bays flanking the doorway, and the main gable wall includes a Venetian window recessed behind the loggia. On the outer left and right, there are three-bay pedimented pavilion blocks, each with a single window in each bay, although the window in the 11th bay is blocked.

The northwest elevation, facing New Market Road, has six bays with a three-bay pavilion block on the outer left. The ground floor is advanced with a flat roof and a cill course at ground level, featuring cream ashlar gableheads. There are three openings at ground level in each bay, which are now blocked, and each bay has gabled round-arched windows at the first floor behind. A pitched roof block with no openings and a chimney stalk is attached to the outer right.

The southeast elevation mirrors the northwest elevation with six bays and a three-bay pavilion block on the outer right. The ground floor is also advanced with a flat roof and a cill course, featuring cream ashlar gableheads. Similar to the northwest elevation, there are three blocked openings at ground level in each bay, with gabled round-arched windows at the first floor behind. The northeast elevation has small pane sash and case glazing, while the side elevation features fixed panes with hoppers. The roofs are covered with grey slate and include large skylights, a raised glass skylight, and a ventilator on the main roof, along with original rainwater goods, including hoppers.

Additionally, there are two corniced panelled gatepiers located between the Corn Market and the former Market Refreshment Rooms, which is listed separately.
