Description

The Newmarket Bar Public House, located at 10 New Market Road in Gorgie, Edinburgh, was designed by James A Williamson, City Superintendent of Works, in 1909. This single-storey building features a symmetrical rectangular plan with nine bays and was originally used as market refreshment rooms and implement halls. The exterior is constructed from pink bull-faced sandstone with cream sandstone dressings, and includes raised window surrounds that form aprons, two-leaf panelled doors, and timber mullioned and transomed windows.

On the northeast elevation, bays four to six are slightly advanced, featuring a parapet and a central pediment that once housed a Venetian window. There is an altered doorway set within a round-arched panel at the center, with a later doorway added in the fourth bay and a window in the sixth bay. The third and seventh bays contain recessed doorways, while the remaining bays have windows.

The southeast elevation mirrors this design, with a parapet and pediment over the three bays on the outer right, and a doorway located in the third bay from the right. An adjoining eleven-bay range is present to the left, along with a secondary corniced doorway in the sixth bay and a rendered addition on the outer left.

The building features plate glass two-pane windows with blocked top panels, a grey slate roof, a louvered ogee-roofed ventilator, and original rainwater goods.
