Metal Works, 101, 103, 105, 107, 109 Constitution Street, Leith, Edinburgh

The Metal Works at 101, 103, 105, 107, and 109 Constitution Street in Leith, Edinburgh, dates from around 1855. This three-storey, four-bay tenement and workshop features a large two-storey workshop at the rear. The front is constructed of red brick, rendered to simulate ashlar, with a band course above the ground floor and chamfered doorways.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, the ground floor openings have been altered. Number 101 has a two-leaf panelled door with a narrow plate glass fanlight above it. The first floor has regular fenestration, with elaborate iron window guards on the left bays.

The northeast elevation is gabled, featuring an apex stack and a small window at the gablehead. The southwest elevation mirrors this with a truncated apex stack adjacent to a rubble gabled range. The southeast (rear) elevation includes a large two-storey brick-built workshop, which is joined by a rubble gabled wing that runs at right angles to the southwest.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with four panes on the front and some twelve panes at the rear. The slate roof has two apexes, and there are mutual brick stacks. The eaves gutter is moulded.

Inside, there are remnants of former stained glass studios, including stained glass sample panels in the doors and windows.
