Description
The pillar surmounted by a wyvern on Grange Loan in Edinburgh dates back to the early 18th century. It is a square ashlar pillar, approximately 3 meters high, integrated into the boundary wall of 130 Grange Loan and Lovers' Loan.
The south elevation facing Grange Loan features a rubble base that rises to about 75 centimeters. The pillar itself is fluted and has carved ashlar bands, including two bands with tassel carvings and one blank band. At the top, there is an Ionic style capital, and a plinth supports a carved stone coronet and wyvern, with the wyvern's head facing east. The western face, which faces Lovers' Loan, is made of banded polished ashlar. The pillar is attached to a tall rubble boundary wall to the north.
