Former Chalmers Memorial Hall, 51, 51A Lanark Road

The Former Chalmers Memorial Hall, located at 51 and 51A Lanark Road, was designed by James Jerdan in 1901. This two-storey building features a wide four-bay hall above ground floor shop premises, showcasing simple Renaissance detailing as the ground slopes to the east. The exterior is finished in white painted render, with painted coursed stone on the first floor, and includes a red sandstone cornice, skews, and finials. A narrow cill course runs along the first floor. The ground floor has a modern plate glass shop front inserted in the center, while a prominent painted stone and architraved doorway is situated to the far left. This doorway features a large tympanum, a carved escutcheon dated 1899, and initialed 'D C', along with a small window on the rounded corner to the left of the door. The gable above the doorway is steeply pitched, corniced, and finialled, with staggered pilasters extending from the ground to the cornice. To the far right, there is a shaped gabled window that breaks the eaves, and a bell-cast lantern with a finial, lead cap, and red tile cheeks.

On the rear elevation, there are full-height shouldered corniced chimneystacks flanking the first floor hall, which overhangs a steel-braced ground floor. A door to the ground floor shop is located to the left under a canopy. To the far right, there is an advanced monopitched section with a tripartite mullioned window on the upper storey and a blank ground floor. The hall features three unevenly spaced windows.

The hall is fitted with six-pane casement timber windows that have round-headed upper panes, and transomed three-pane casement timber windows in the outer bays. The main entrance has a two-leaf panelled door. The pitched roof is covered with red rosemary tiles and terracotta ridge tiles, with a corniced rendered ridge stack to the east and an ashlar cyma recta corniced stack to the west, which is a party stack with Slateford House. Conical clay cans are present to the east.

Inside, a stone stair to the east leads to the first floor landing and hall. The interior features a timber boarded dado, architraved windows, and timber chimney pieces, including one to the east that is surmounted by a bronze relief memorial roundel depicting a bust of David Chalmer. The hall has a timber kingpost and hammerbeam roof construction and is linked to 53 Lanark Road (Slateford House) via a doorway in the northwest of the plan.
