Gladstone Memorial, Coates Crescent, Edinburgh

The Gladstone Memorial, located on Coates Crescent in Edinburgh, was designed by J Pittendrigh McGillivray and constructed between 1916 and 1917. This Renaissance-style pedestrian monument is made of red granite and features a central bronze statue along with subsidiary bronzes. It stands 30 feet high, 28 feet wide, and 15 feet deep. The memorial has a stepped and shaped base that rises to a dentilled cornice.

At the front, a shaped split-level plinth supports a bronze sculpture of two boys holding an eagle and a laurel wreath standard, accompanied by an inscribed banner. Large flanking consoles with pilasters on the sides and a Doric scroll at the rear support seated bronze figures representing Eloquentia on the left and Historia on the right. The circular plan plinth is bracketed at the four corners to support additional subsidiary plinths.

Life-size bronze figures representing Fortitude and Measure are positioned at the front, while Militaria and Faith are located at the rear, all fronting bronze pilasters with half Ionic capitals. The cornice features a bronze egg and dart moulding. At the top, the central plinth supports another bronze plinth, which holds the primary bronze figurative statue of W. E. Gladstone in Chancellor's robes.
