Car Showroom, 1-2 Russell Road, Edinburgh

The Car Showroom located at 1-2 Russell Road in Edinburgh was designed by Thomas Greenshields Leadbetter and J McLellan Fairley in 1896. This building features a polygonal asymmetrical corner block that rises two stories with an attic at the corner of Roseburn Street and Terrace. Other sections of the building are single story with an attic, and there is a polygonal tower on the northwest side. A prominent round-arched vehicle entrance with a pediment is located on the southwest side, and the structure is built around a covered, top-lit court. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced red sandstone with cream sandstone dressings, and there is a string course between the ground and first floors, along with long and short quoins and tabbed surrounds to the windows.

On the north elevation facing Roseburn Terrace, the ground floor has been significantly altered. The polygonal tower is situated on the outer right, topped with a weathervane on its facetted, conical, slated roof.

The northwest elevation on Roseburn Street consists of three bays, with modern glazing on the ground floor. Two windows break the eaves, featuring finialled, pedimented dormerheads.

The southwest elevation on Russell Road includes a three-storey gabled bay on the left with modern glazing on the ground floor. There is a gabled dormer breaking the eaves at the second bay from the left. A single-storey linking section is located in the center, which has a pedimented bay on the left with a roll-moulded, round-arched vehicle entrance (also with modern glazing), and a gabled bay on the right that features a timber-boarded door in a roll-moulded surround, along with a former loft door above.

The south elevation has an external metal stair leading to a door at the first floor, a battered wallhead stack on the left, and a finialled, pedimented dormer breaking the eaves on the right.

The building predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and red ridge tiles, and there are kneelered stone skews. The chimney stacks are corniced with circular cans.
