Description

The Church of the Holy Cross is an Episcopal church built in 1911-1913 to a design by John More Dick Peddie. It has a cruciform plan, oriented west to east, consisting of a two-bay, aisleless nave, and is built in a simple neo-Romanesque style. A low, square tower with a pyramid roof remains unfinished, situated at the centre of the building. The church contains stained glass windows dating to the 1930s by Christopher Webb.

The building is constructed from Corstorphine stone rubble with smooth ashlar surrounds. The window openings are predominantly round-arched; the gables have triple-light windows, with the central light being taller. A hoodmould and stained glass are present on the window in the east gable. A timber-framed porch with turned balusters is set into the west gable entrance.

A single-storey vestry is located in the re-entrant angle at the southeast corner. The south gable features a tripartite, flat-arched window with stone mullions. Above the window is a small iron bell, possibly originating from the earlier corrugated iron church that previously stood on the site. The vestry has a round-arched door opening in the south wall, accessed by a short flight of steps, and a square porch is found in the re-entrant angle at the northeast corner.

Stained glass windows are located in the east gable (Webb, 1930) and in the south wall of the nave (dating from 1990). The remaining windows contain multi-pane leaded lights. The steeply pitched roofs are covered with brown slates, and the rafter ends are visible beneath the overhanging eaves, which are slightly lower at the chancel end.

To the east and north of the church, a rounded coped boundary wall is present with replacement plain metal railings.

The church interior, observed in 2018, has exposed rubble stone walls. Large, chamfered arches in ashlar, supported on large corner piers, flank the crossing. The roof is supported by scissor-braced rafters, which in turn are supported by carved timber corbels, except for the chancel, which has carved stone corbels.

Exclusion from the listing, in accordance with Section 1 (4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997, applies to the church hall to the west.
