Croft An Righ House, 28-30 Croft An Righ, Edinburgh

Croft An Righ House, located at 28-30 Croft An Righ in Edinburgh, is a fine example of a 16th-century Scots Renaissance mansion that was reconstructed in the later 17th century. This two-storey and attic building is designed in an L-plan and features three corbelled-out circular turrets at the south-facing angles, along with impressive interior plasterwork. The exterior is constructed of rubble with raised ashlar margins.

On the northeast elevation, there is a door located in the second bay from the left, with later window insertions above in a four-bay arrangement. The eaves are interrupted by three pedimented wall-head dormers. Additional dormers are present on the south and west-facing elevations of the re-entrant angle. A forestair and railing lead to the central doorway on the east elevation, which has irregular fenestration returning to the turret at the northeast corner, featuring a small window. The turrets themselves have small single windows and conical roofs topped with ball-and-spike finials.

Inside, a stone stair rises through the center of the building, connecting all floors. The first floor contains two rooms with elaborate Jacobethan plaster ceilings, and some rooms are adorned with roll-moulded fireplaces.

The house is topped with grey, graded Scottish slate and features tall, broad end stacks, along with a variety of clay cans and cast iron rainwater goods.

The boundary walls and gates are built of rubble and flank the east elevation at right angles, with the left section being higher and containing a doorway that leads to a walled courtyard south of the house. Above the gate opposite the east elevation, there is fine strapwork carving with the inscription 'Croft-an-righ Cottage' on the lintel. Sections of the boundary wall adjoining the southwest angle connect to the palace wall, which has a now-blocked round-arched opening. The wall to the south and west forms part of the boundary of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. A flight of steps rises steeply from the south courtyard into the palace grounds.
