Description

St Leonard's Lodge, located at 23 Holyrood Park Road in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, was designed by Robert Matheson and built between 1863 and 1865. This picturesque lodge features a T-plan layout with one and two stories and three bays, characterized by distinctive jerkin-headed gables. It is situated at the northwest entrance to the park and has been divided into two flats as of 2007.

The exterior is constructed from dark ashlar sandstone with polished cream margins, and the windows are chamfered. It has a base course and chamfered corners with cyma recta details above. The broad, overhanging eaves enhance its architectural appeal. The east elevation includes a central gabled projecting porch that features a Tudor-arched door surround and a timber boarded entrance door. Above the door, there is a carved inset panel displaying the monogram VR and the probable date of 1865. The north elevation boasts a five-bay timber verandah.

The lodge predominantly has two-pane timber casement windows, with some later additions of skylights. The roof is covered with graded blue and grey slates and features jerkin-headed designs. Tall, coped ridge and wallhead stacks are splayed to the wallhead.

The interior, as seen in 2007, has been comprehensively modernized.
