Description
10-12 Broughton Street in Edinburgh is an 1810 three-storey and basement terrace building with six bays, originally a pair of three-bay classical houses. The exterior features polished ashlar sandstone with broached ashlar at the basement. It has a base course, band courses between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal and first floors, as well as a cill course at the first floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The first floor has bracketed projecting cills, and the second floor has projecting cills. The polished ashlar steps and entrance platts extend over the basement.
On the northeast (principal) elevation, there are advanced paired doorpieces in the center bays, which consist of engaged fluted Doric columns flanking six-panel timber doors with rectangular fanlights featuring a rectilinear pattern. These are linked by a continuous entablature with a frieze adorned with wreaths and a cornice. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows, while the floors above and the basement exhibit regular fenestration. The basement houses a public house known as The Basement, with a flagged basement area.
The southeast elevation is three bays wide, featuring coupled giant order Ionic pilasters flanking the center bay at the first and second floors. There are blind windows except for the right side at the first and second floors. The center bay has paired stacks that are connected by a coped parapet.
The northwest elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately as 14-22A Broughton Street. The southwest (rear) elevation was not visible during the 1998 inspection.
The building includes 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The wallhead stacks are rendered and corniced, with circular cans. The interiors were not seen during the 1998 inspection, but there is evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and pineapple finials.
