Description

25 Broughton Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey building with a basement and attic, designed by Robert Burn in 1808. This six-bay terraced tenement features a set-back common stair bay to the right and mid-19th century projecting shopfronts at the ground level. The exterior is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with painted shopfronts below. Notable architectural details include a fascia band for the shopfronts, a cill band at the first floor, projecting cills above, a cornice, and a blocking course. There is also a string course above the first floor in the bays to the right, along with ashlar steps and entrance platts that oversail the entrances to the right and center.

On the principal elevation, there is a timber door with a fanlight located in the slightly recessed common entrance bay to the right, accessed by a three-step flight with cast-iron railings. The public house front to the outer left (No 25) has a recessed entrance, consoles, and architraved margins, while the shop to the right (No 23) has undergone modern alterations. The upper floors feature regular fenestration, with two canted dormers on the left. The first floor has timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing, while the stair bay and second floor have 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates and has ridge stacks with terracotta cans, along with iron railings in the bays to the right.
