Description

St Ninian's Roman Catholic Primary School, located on Restalrig Road South in Edinburgh, was designed by J M Johnston in 1931. This two-storey school features an asymmetrical plan and is constructed from brick, with harled terracotta and facing brick dressings and margins.

The principal elevation on the southwest side is symmetrical, consisting of a 16-bay grid with closely spaced bays framed in terracotta brick. It has a deep base course and strip pilasters, with contrasting brick panels between the floors and bays, all set against harled walls. The central entrance showcases an Art Deco design, featuring a terrazzo finish on concrete and topped with a gilded mosaic cross and stylised hoodmould. The entrance has a twin leaf door that is recessed and includes a multi-pane rectangular fanlight. Above the first floor, there is a concrete and stone name panel. The elevation is finished with brick wallhead coping and flanked by advanced single-storey wings that are blank.

The southeast elevation has an advanced wing on the left and a 19-bay section to the right that is regularly fenestrated, with terracotta brick margins. The northeast elevation is asymmetrical, with seven bays and plain margins, featuring a door offset to the left at the second opening that leads to a steel spiral fire escape. The northwest elevation is also asymmetrical with irregular fenestration and plain margins. It has an advanced wing to the right, a small projecting bay with an entrance porch in the centre, and an advanced section to the left that includes a twin leaf entrance door and an advanced four-bay wing with single-storey flat-roofed additions.

Original windows remain on the northwest and northeast elevations, featuring wood frames and steel sashes with multi-pane designs. However, modern replacement windows have been installed on the southwest and southeast elevations. The original design included a copper-clad flat roof for the main body of the building, with asphalt on concrete used elsewhere.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of a brick dwarf wall topped with Art Deco wrought-iron railings on the front (southwest), similar railings and a gate on the northwest, and a coped brick boundary wall to the north.
