Description

J M Johnston, 1931. 2-storey, asymmetrical plan school building. Brick, harled terracotta and facing brick dressings and margins.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical, 16-bay grid, closely spaced bays in terracotta brick framework of deep base course and strip pilasters, with contrasting brick panels between floors and bays framed by harled walls, central Art-Deco entrance, terrazzo finish on concrete, surmounted by gilded mosaic cross with stylised hoodmould, twin leaf door recessed with multi-pane rectangular fanlight, concrete and stone name panel to centre above 1st floor. Brick wallhead coping. Flanking advanced single storey wings, blank.

SE ELEVATION: advanced wing to left, 19-bay regularly fenestrated section to right, terracotta brick margins.

NE ELEVATION: 7 bays, asymmetrical, plain margins, door off-set to left at 2nd opening onto steel spiral fire escape.

NW ELEVATION: asymmetrical, irregular fenestration, plain margins, advanced wing to right, small projecting bay to centre with entrance porch in return, advanced section to left with twin leaf entrance door, advanced 4-bay wing to left with single storey flat-roofed additions (see Notes).

Original windows survive to NW and NE, wood frames and steel sashes, multi-pane, modern replacement windows to SW (entrance front) and SE. Original design provided for copper clad flat roof to main body of building, asphalt on concrete elsewhere.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

BOUNDARY WALLS: brick dwarf wall, coped with Art-Deco wrought-iron railings to front (SW), similar railings and gate to NW, coped brick boundary wall to N.
