Description

Brooklyn House is an early 19th-century house that was enlarged and altered in 1879. It is a two-storey and basement, three-bay, T-shaped building with castellated and baronial additions. The house is a mix of harled and sandstone ashlar construction, with ashlar dressings, an eaves band, and a cornice.

The east (principal) elevation features a dominant, advanced centre bay built in ashlar in 1879. A five-flight stone staircase, flanked by low walls and lion statues, leads to the entrance, which is on the raised principal floor. The entrance is in a three-part doorway with shoulder-arched leads, flanked by narrow windows all set within a shallow arch terminating in a cable hoodmoulding. A bipartite window is positioned at the first floor, featuring chamfered margins and a cornice with strapwork above. A small window with a cable hoodmould sits at the top of the gable, which has a crowstepped detail and a ball finial. The corners of the ground floor are rounded, while those of the first floor are chamfered, with windows set in the returns at ground floor level. The flanking bays are harled, with windows at ground and first floors, and simple margins.

The west (rear) elevation is asymmetrical. It incorporates a large, advanced, ashlar, canted bay extending from the basement to the roof. It has two windows at the basement level, and tripartite windows with single windows flanking at the ground and first floors, all with chamfered margins and a cable moulding above the ground floor windows that frames a date stone (1879). Moulded corbels support battlements, and a stone cross sits at the centre of the parapet. A bay to the right is harled, with two windows at the basement level and a blank space above. A bay to the left is also harled and blank, with a stair tower in the re-entrant angle. All margins are plain.

The north elevation is also asymmetrical. A semicircular, harled stair tower is positioned centrally, with a door at the basement level and a window at the first floor. Two small windows are set off-centre at the first floor, above the roofs. The tower rises above the main roofline displaying an ashlar octagonal battlements decorated with panels, mouldings, corbels, waterspouts, and cable moulding. Small windows are placed at the base of each face. A gable end bay to the left, harled, has two windows to the basement level, and a window at ground and first floors, off-set to the right. A bay to the right is blank. Margins are plain.

The south elevation consists of a bay to the right, which is a gable end, harled, with windows at the first and second floors. A bay to the left is blank and has plain margins.

The interior has been converted into two dwellings. A ground floor room to the rear features a mutule cornice with egg and dart and cable mouldings, and a large, decorative ceiling rose.

Boundary walls and railings are constructed of rubble stone and coping to the north and south. A concrete block is present to the north at the rear, while the front features tooled ashlar with cast-iron railings and gates, which have decorative scrollwork at their ends.
