3 Swanston Village, Edinburgh

3 Swanston Village in Edinburgh is a terrace of two single-storey and attic cottages, built around 1850 and altered or extended in 1933. The cottages are constructed from coursed stugged sandstone, with droved edges and droved ashlar dressings, while the rear and side extensions are made of harled brick. The openings feature architraved surrounds, with semicircular panels at the top of those on the principal north elevation. The cottages have a projecting eaves band and coped gables.

On the north elevation, there is a central entrance with a boarded timber door and a 2-pane rectangular fanlight for each cottage, flanked by windows. There is also a small window to the left of No 4. The south elevation features a short single-storey flat-roofed extension for each cottage, each with two windows and an entrance on the right return. To the left of this entrance for No 4, there is an earlier lean-to section. Between the cottages, there is a shared 4-light boxed dormer window, inserted in 1933, with timber mullions at the center.

The east elevation includes a small lean-to with coped skews, while the west elevation has an entrance to the lean-to with a small window to the left. The cottages mainly feature 8 and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The main body of the terrace and the lean-to sections have slate roofs, while the rear extensions have flat leaded roofs. There are two corniced gablehead stacks, one at the center of the ridge, with round and decorative octagonal cans. The property also has cast-iron rainwater goods. The interiors were not inspected in 1997.
