Description

51 Lauder Road is a double villa designed by John Paterson around 1868. It is a two-storey, four-bay building with a symmetrical rectangular plan. The exterior features squared and snecked rubble, along with snecked and stugged ashlar that has polished dressings on the west (entrance) elevation. Notable architectural details include base and eaves courses, quoin strips with nook-shafts and miniature carved capitals, a bracketed cornice, and nook-shafted margins and mullions adorned with various foliate capitals. The windows are mainly round-arched on the ground floor and segmental on the first floor.

On the west elevation, the entrances are located at the second and third bays, featuring round-arched doorways flanked by colonettes with carved foliate capitals. The deep-set two-leaf panelled doors are topped with round-arched plate glass fanlights. Above the entrances are single windows, while the outer left and right sides have advanced full-height canted windows with dividing cornices.

The north elevation has single windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a single-storey piend-roofed former service wing, which is now a garage. The villa is fitted with plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead flashing, moulded eaves guttering, and four shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks on the north and south sides (two of which are rendered on the south). There is also a dormer on the south side.

Inside, the vestibules feature ornate plaster mouldings. The property is enclosed by a very low saddleback wall along the street, which rises to approximately 3 meters at Hatton Place.
