Description
5 Cockburn Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic, four-bay tenement built in the Scots Baronial style between 1859 and 1861 by architects Peddie and Kinnear. The building features a slightly convex facade with shops on the ground floor. It is constructed from squared and snecked lightly stugged sandstone, with polished dressings that have been painted at the ground level. There are moulded string courses at the ground and second floors, and the ground floor openings have roll-moulded surrounds, while the windows above are framed in tabbed, stop-chamfered surrounds. The facade is regularly fenestrated, with four finialled gabled dormer windows in the attic. The shop to the left has a two-leaf timber panelled storm door. The ground floor windows are fitted with plate glass, while the upper floors have two-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced stacks with circular cans.
