Description

15, 17, and 19 Hart Street is a classical corner tenement building constructed between 1820 and 1821. It is a four-storey structure with a basement, featuring five bays on Hart Street, where the left bay is bowed, and six bays on Broughton Place. The building is made of sandstone ashlar, with rustication at the ground level, a base course, band courses between each floor, a cill band at the first floor, corniced eaves, and a blocking course. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the west elevation facing Hart Street, there is a timber panelled door with an architraved surround and a round-arched tripartite doorway. To the right of the centre is a fanlight, and there is another timber panelled door to the entrance on the right. The windows in the bays remain, with regular fenestration above, although the windows in the fifth bay at the second and third floors are blinded for symmetry.

The north elevation facing Broughton Place features a tripartite doorway with a timber panelled door that has a round-arched umbrella astragalled fanlight, along with blocked fanlights in a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece to the left of centre. The windows in the bays remain, but the fifth bay at the ground, first, and second floors above are blinded for symmetry. The regular fenestration above includes irregularly dispersed blind openings.

The building has timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing on Broughton Street and a mix of 12-pane and plate glass glazing on Hart Street. It also features gable and wallhead stacks with terracotta cans, skews, and decorative cast-iron railings. The interior was not seen in 1998.
