Description
1-7 Holyrood Road in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic row of tenements built in 1869 by D Cousins and J Lessels. This multi-gabled, crowstepped Scots Baronial style building features a seven-bay facade facing Boyd's Entry and a six-bay facade on Holyrood Road, with shops on the ground floor and a single-storey, balustraded shop at No 7 Holyrood Road. The structure is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar margins, and includes a cill course at Nos 58-62 and a cornice at the second storey. The windows are a mix of segmental-arched and rectangular openings, some with cornices, and there are pedimented dormers, some featuring apex stacks. A canted corner bay at Cowgate is adorned with turrets topped with pepperpot roofs, while a canted, corbelled corner at Boyd's Entry displays a painted bull figurehead.
The shopfronts primarily feature stone pilasters and fascias, with some showcasing decorative metal stallrisers. No 52 has glass brick stallrisers and canopies, and the shops have recessed entrances with two-leaf timber storm doors. The flats above typically have four and six-pane timber entrance doors.
The rear elevation includes a projecting, flat-roofed ground storey with common drying greens above, enclosed by metal railings. The upper storeys predominantly feature four-pane timber sash and case windows, while the ground floor has plate glass windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes gable stacks, along with cast iron rainwater goods.
To the east, there is a boundary wall made of coped rubble with lower sections topped by metal railings, and gatepiers that have pyramidal caps.
