Description

This is a Gothic style house located at 18 West Mayfield, Edinburgh, designed by Hippolyte J Blanc in 1876, with some modern alterations. The building is two storeys and a basement, featuring three asymmetrical bays and a single storey wing on the east side. It is constructed from squared and snecked cream rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, and includes a base course, decorative bargeboards, and deeply overhanging eaves.

The northern elevation, which faces the entrance, has steps leading to a central pointed arched doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. There is a single round arched window on the first floor above the entrance, and to the outer left on the ground floor, a window set in a pointed arched panel with a quatrefoil motif. Above this, on the first floor, is another window with a pediment that breaks the eaves. The outer right features an advanced gabled bay with a trefoil-headed tripartite window at the ground level, and a shouldered arched tripartite window on the first floor, along with a carved quatrefoil roundel and pointed arch at the gablehead. The single storey wing adjoining the house to the east has a shouldered arched bipartite window.

The southern elevation includes a modern extension to the basement that supports a balcony on the ground floor above. There is a three-light canted window on the ground floor to the outer left, a bipartite window on the first floor above, and tripartite windows on both floors in the bay to the outer right.

The house features plate glass, timber, sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof, and tall wallhead stacks.

The boundary walls consist of a low coped wall along the street and a high rubble mutual wall to the east, which terminates in a panelled gatepier. There is also a pedestrian gate adjoining the house to the east.
