Description

9-11 Barnshot Road in Colinton, Edinburgh, designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1884, is a pair of single-storey and attic, 6-bay, T-plan semi-detached cottages in the Arts and Crafts style, each containing two flats. The front elevation features four half-timbered tripartite dormers that break the eaves, while a similar pair forms an M-gable at the rear. The cottages have asymmetrical half-timbered gables on the northwest and southeast sides. They are constructed from squared and snecked bull-faced cream sandstone with ashlar dressings.

The outer bays of the southwest elevation have 4-light piend-roofed canted windows at ground level, and the inner bays feature stone-mullioned and -transomed bipartite windows. There are timber panelled doors set in roll-moulded, shouldered arched surrounds on the northwest and southeast elevations, with rectangular leaded fanlights above the lintels and pointed arch hoodmoulds adorned with foliate ball stops. A small window is located on the outer flank, with a single casement above it. The central dormered bays on the northeast are slightly advanced, and the outer angles are splayed, featuring a lean-to outshot below that includes a timber panelled back door and a window on the outer flank. The main roof sweeps down to the outer bays, which have 4-light flat-roofed dormers, and there are later flat-roofed porch and conservatory extensions below.

The cottages predominantly feature timber casements with small-pane glazing above plate glass. The roof is covered with red tiles and has deep bracketed eaves and plain barge boards on the gables, including those on the dormers. The plain corniced stacks have tall red clay cans.

The boundary wall is made of ashlar coped snecked sandstone and includes decorative wrought-iron gates.
