Description
132 Princes Street in Edinburgh is a late 18th-century building that originally consisted of two classical houses, possibly designed by James Nisbet. The structure was refurbished and unified in 1994. It features three storeys and an attic, with a total of three bays, constructed from painted polished sandstone ashlar. The ground floor has two modern shopfronts that extend over the basement.
The eastern bays display an early 20th-century first floor made of timber with curvilinear glazing. The original second floor is highlighted by the upper sections of giant Ionic pilasters, a frieze, a mutuled eaves cornice, and a blocking course. There are also two large pedimented tripartite dormers.
The western bays were formerly two droved ashlar houses, now with later architraves. To the right, there are consoled mutuled cornices at the first floor, while to the left, a later 19th-century canted timber window features three lights at the centre, flanked by Corinthian pilasters and bracketed cills on the second floor. Additionally, there are two dissimilar pairs of later 19th-century piend-roofed canted dormers, with the right pair having bracketed cornices.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass and four panes. The building has ashlar coped skews, rendered stacks, and is covered with grey slates. Inside, a single modern retail unit occupies the two right houses and the upper floors of the left house.
