Description

7 Rustic Cottages in Edinburgh, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1901, is a single-storey and attic terrace consisting of four cottages. The design reflects English vernacular style, featuring advanced jerkin-headed gables on the end bays and a swept roof over recessed doorways and a canted window at the front. The cottages have two boat-shaped dormers in the attic. The exterior is finished in painted render with sandstone cills on the end gables, and the basecourse is slightly corbelled out on the upper floor of the end gables. The timber boarded doors have glazed upper sections and chamfered outer corners on the end gables, while tripartite casements are present on the gables. The inner bays have identical doors leading to recessed areas, with a roof that sweeps over to create a porch. A large canted window is positioned in the center, with bipartite casements in the dormers above. The rear features four dormers with piended roofs, except for the dormer at No. 5.

The cottages predominantly have 6-pane glazing in the timber casements. The chimney stacks are made of ashlar with rendered surfaces and tall red clay cans, topped with graded grey slate.

The property is enclosed by a low rubble boundary wall to the north, which includes some decorative wrought-iron gates, and an ashlar-coped rendered boundary wall to the west.
