Description

1 Rustic Cottages in Edinburgh were designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1900, with some later alterations. These are single-storey and attic, semi-detached cottages, each with one bay at the front. They feature a simplified English vernacular style, characterized by large boat-shaped dormers that break the eaves at the attic on the north side, and a bell-cast jerkin-headed roof. The exterior is finished in painted render.

The outer right side has a timber boarded door with three-pane glazing at the top, and to the left, there is a tripartite window with a bipartite dormer above. On the outer left, there is another timber boarded door within a circular porch that has a central window; to the right of this, there is a later bow window, with a tripartite dormer above. The other elevations display irregular fenestration, with piend-roofed dormers at the rear, including a later enlargement at No 1. There is also a modern conservatory attached to the rear of No 1.

No 1 has replacement casements, while No 2 retains small-pane glazing in timber casements. A bow-topped central stack is present, rendered with an ashlar cornice, and the roofs are covered with graded grey slate.

The boundary walls include a rubble wall with decorative wrought-iron gates to the north and a concrete-coped rendered wall to the east.
