Description
142-143 Princes Street in Edinburgh is a bank building originally designed by John MacLachlan in 1888, with the facade retained and enclosed by Basil Spence, Glover and Ferguson in 1976. The structure features a 3-storey, 4-bay Italianate bank facade that has been incorporated into a modern 5-storey bank. The original facade is made of polished cream sandstone ashlar and has been stone cleaned. It includes a ground floor with Corinthian columns and pedimented end porches, Corinthian aedicules at the first floor, a swagged frieze at the cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The original facade is now surrounded by an unfortunate banded bronzed plate glass and ashlar curtain wall, which steps back to the fourth floor. The interior has been modernized for bank use.
