Description
4 Argyle Park Terrace in Edinburgh is a pair of four-storey tenements with an attic, built around 1876 by W Hamilton Beattie. These symmetrical buildings are designed in a Baronial style and feature five bays that mirror each other around the center. The exterior is made of squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a dividing band course between the ground and first floors, a corbel table above the second floor with segmental arches over the windows, crowstepped gables, and raised window surrounds.
On the north elevation, each tenement block has a central doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. The central gable is adorned with two round-arched gablehead windows, while single windows are located in the bays on either side of the center. The outer bays feature three-storey canted windows, topped with cornices and cast-iron brattishing that create a mock balcony for the third-floor bipartite windows. Gabled timber dormers, which have finials at No 5, include bracketed bargeboards and round-arched bipartite windows.
The buildings predominantly have four-pane plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes corniced gableheads, shared stacks, moulded cans, and moulded eaves guttering, with some original rainwater goods still in place.
The interiors were not seen in 1990, and there is a low saddleback wall along the street.
