Description

The East Gate-Lodge at Newliston House, likely designed by David Bryce in 1848, is a baronial-style lodge featuring a three-storey tower alongside two-storey and single-storey bays that step down. It is constructed from rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and has chamfered arrises.

The three-storey tower has a steeply pitched saddleback roof and includes a square bay with a circular stair tower attached to the southeast corner. The stair tower jetties above the first floor and features a cipher panel, narrow windows, a candlesnuffer roof topped with a lead ball finial, and a stone forestair to the east. A gabled timber porch has been added to the west elevation, flanked by a ground floor window; there is a later first floor window and a heraldic panel on the second floor. The south elevation is gabled and includes windows at the ground and second floors, with the latter featuring a cornice and carved ornament, as well as a carved panel at the first floor. The east elevation has a forestair leading to the ground, a carved pediment above the first floor window, and a segmental pediment above the second floor window that breaks the eaves.

To the north, there is a gabled two-storey block with a window on each floor facing west and irregular windows on the east side. A gabled single-storey service block is also located to the north, featuring a window on the west side.

The windows throughout include small-pane and diamond-pane glazing patterns in sash and case and fixed styles, although some modern windows have been installed. The building has crowstepped gables and corniced gablehead stacks, all covered with grey slates.

Additionally, there is a single-storey gabled stone outbuilding located to the northwest in the garden, which is en suite and has a door and window facing south, along with a door and gablehead stack on the west side.

The gatepiers and walls consist of ashlar gatepiers with pulvinated bands and cornices, with coped ashlar walls that sweep down from the piers, leading to a garden gate by the lodge. There are also rubble garden walls surrounding the property.
