9 North St David Street, Edinburgh

9 North St David Street is a former tenement building dating from around 1775, which was restored by Robert Hurd and Partners in the 1980s. This three-storey building, with a basement and attic, is located on a corner site and is constructed of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings and channelled quoin strips.

The elevation facing St David Street features six bays and includes a two-bay wallhead gable with a pair of architraved and corniced doorpieces positioned in the centre bays. The elevation facing Queen Street has a four-bay gable, and the original projecting 19th-century shopfront has been removed at ground level.

Inside, the building is now a single office but was previously divided into flats. The former flats included a fanlit hallway, and the north rooms of each flat offered views towards Leith. Fine carved and gesso timber chimneypieces can be found in these rooms, and cornices are preserved throughout the interior.
