Description

1 Queen Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey attic and basement classical corner block, designed as a replica by Reiach, Hall & Partners in 1969. The building is constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, featuring long and short quoins at the corner. The entrances on North St David Street have corniced architraved doorpieces, with a plate glass fanlight above the main door and a three-pane fanlight above the door at No 3. Steps and platts oversail the basement area.

On the east elevation facing North St David Street, there are three bays, with the central door slightly displaced to the left. An attic window is located in the gablehead above the centre bay, which abuts a projecting modern block to the south.

The north elevation facing Queen Street features a cornice and blocking course. No 2 has five symmetrical bays with a pilastered doorpiece at the centre and a plate glass fanlight, along with a set-back link that includes downpipes. No 3 also has five bays, with a central door and three right bays that are displaced to the right.

The building has timber sash and case 12-pane windows, grey slate roofing, ashlar-coped skews, and coped ashlar stacks. The interior consists of modern open plan offices. The property is complemented by cast-iron spearhead railings and wrought-iron lamps located on North St David Street and at No 3.
