Roxy Cinema, 392 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh

The Roxy Cinema, located at 392 Gorgie Road in Edinburgh, is a prominent former cinema built in 1937 by Chadwick, Watson & Co from Leeds. This Art Deco building features a distinctive bowed corner at a road junction, constructed from red brick with concrete detailing. The base, lintels, sign board cills, and double courses below the attic are all made of concrete, with additional concrete surrounds for the sign boards and the central bowed feature. The rear of the building is rendered.

The bowed corner consists of a five-bay full-height bow with three openings at the ground level beneath a fanned canopy. The first and second floors have regular window arrangements, separated by pilasters, with fluted aprons and fluted lintels on the second floor. At the attic level, there is a deep blank wallhead that steps up towards the center. The elevations facing Gorgie Road and Alexander Drive are nearly identical, featuring deeply recessed doors in the outer bays and an additional door in the inner bay on Gorgie Road. Broad, recessed sign board panels span the first and second floors, topped with a cornice and a deep banded blocking course, with each attic floor having a tripartite window at the center.

The rear elevations have quasi-pilaster strips that outline the wall plane, with irregular windows near the street, some of which are blocked, in the taller section. The lower section extends back and has a pitched roof. The windows are metal-framed, with opening central panes surrounded by fixed borders, and the attic windows feature metal lying-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate.

The original interior of the cinema was demolished and redeveloped for shops and flats in 1997.
