Mecca State Social Club, 204-208 Great Junction Street, Edinburgh

The Mecca State Social Club, located at 204-208 Great Junction Street in Edinburgh, is a large rectangular building designed in the Modern Movement style by James Miller & Partners in 1938. Originally a cinema, it features a two-storey flat-roofed front block with a curved corner entrance and a tower, while the rear houses a warehouse-like auditorium. The exterior is finished with grey harl and white rendered breeze blocks, while the rear hall is constructed of red brick.

The front block includes a three-bay, three-storey office building on the northwest side with shops on the ground floor. The central bay is rendered and has an off-set parapet that breaks the eaves, with a long vertical strip window that is now blocked. The left bay displays an advertising hoarding, while the right bay features bipartite windows on the first and second floors, accented with triangulated rendered mullions. A narrow rendered tower with a long vertical triangulated motif is located on the southeast side, topped with a pyramidal roof covered in green glazed pantiles. The southeast corner is marked by a two-storey, three-bay curved rendered entrance, which has five doorways on the ground floor and three single windows above. There is also a single bay fronting Mill Lane, rendered with an off-set parapet that breaks the eaves and a vertical strip window. The northwest elevation has irregular windows and a large advertising hoarding.

The cinema block is harled on the southeast side, while the northwest elevation facing the Water of Leith is made of red brick and features large blocked windows at the basement level. The building has metal casement windows and corrugated sheeting on the hall.

Inside, the vestibule showcases Art Deco detailing, and the main auditorium features vertical strip motifs on the side walls, with the stage wall also decorated in the Art Deco style.
