St Thomas' Schools And Asylum, 6B Mill Lane, Leith, Edinburgh

St Thomas' Schools and Asylum, located at 6A Mill Lane in Leith, Edinburgh, was designed by John Henderson in 1840. This two-storey, L-shaped building forms an open courtyard alongside the former St Thomas parish church and manse, which are listed separately. The structure features Jacobean details and has been partially refurbished in 1992. It is constructed of cream sandstone with droved ashlar and polished dressings, while the rear is made of squared and snecked rubble.

The building has a base course, continuous hoodmoulds on both the ground and second floors, chamfered arrises, and moulded skews. The eaves line is raised over each bay, leading into lugged gables that include blind round-arched windows and gabled dormerheads with blind roundels. The chimney stacks are grooved and corniced.

On the south elevation, there are ten bays with regular fenestration. The second, sixth, and tenth bays are slightly advanced and feature shaped gables. Doorways are located in the sixth and tenth bays. The west block has a three-bay front elevation with a deeply moulded doorway at the center, accessed by steps. It includes bipartite windows with timber mullions on either side and single windows on the first floor. The shaped gable above the center bay has a blank panel. The return elevation to the courtyard is four bays wide, with single windows and gables that have gablehead stacks in the outer bays. The return elevation to the west mirrors this design but includes crenellations and a gablehead stack at the center.

The north (rear) elevation has been reconstructed and extended during recent conversions. The windows are timber sash and case, while the west block features mostly plate glass glazing. The hospital block has modern 12-pane windows. The roofs are covered with slate and there are five gablehead stacks, along with mutual stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1993. The property also features coped gatepiers and ornamental iron arrowhead railings.
