Gates And Railings, Forecourt To 3 And 4 Thistle Court With Boundary Walls, Thistle Street, Edinburgh

4 Thistle Court in Thistle Street, Edinburgh, is a pair of semi-detached classical houses built in 1767-1768, now functioning as an electrical sub-station. The buildings are two stories high with an attic and feature two bays. They are constructed from sandstone rubble, including some red stone, with ashlar dressings. At the center, there are two corniced architraved doorways with a central wrought-iron lamp bracket. Each side has two bays; on the south side, there is a projecting corniced tripartite window at the ground level, and larger windows on the first floor. The eaves have a cornice, and there is an open-pedimented ashlar wallhead dormer on the south side with canted slate-hung slides, while the north side has a piend-roofed tripartite dormer.

The gable end is irregular and features a garage door at the ground level. The rear elevation has additional openings created at the ground level. The windows are timber sash and case, and the building has ashlar coped skews, grey slate roofing, and stone stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1995 as it is now an electricity sub-station.

The forecourt is enclosed by boundary walls made of ashlar coped rubble, with iron gates featuring thistle fretwork. Ashlar footings and modern railings indicate the site of a former well. There are also a pair of corniced gatepiers with flattened pyramidal copes.
