Description

Craigiehall Temple, located in Lennie, Craigiehall House, Edinburgh, was built in 1759 and incorporates an earlier portico. This circular-plan, single-storey drum temple originally had an extra stage, which was removed in 1975. At the southeast, there is a rectangular-plan stair tower, and a modern addition was built to the east in 1992, which is considered unsympathetic to the original design. The temple is constructed of rubble with an ashlar front.

On the northeast elevation, which overlooks the Craigiehall Estate, there is an early 18th century Doric portico featuring corner piers and paired central columns on a die. The massy segmental pediment is ornately carved with the monogram and arms of the 3rd Earl of Annandale and his wife, Sophia Fairholm. There are plain flanking windows, now unglazed and fitted with small-pane grilles, and above the right window is an inscribed marble date plaque with a Latin inscription that translates to 'live happy while you can among joyful things'.

The southeast elevation features the stair projection, built of rubble with ashlar quoins, and has a large oculus at the upper stage. There is a door at the ground level of the left return. All windows are unglazed but have metal grilles, and the roof is made of concrete.

Inside, the temple has an octagonal layout. The floor between the ground and second levels is missing, and there are plain classical chimneypieces against the west wall. A window opening to the right of the first-floor chimney has been blocked. The interior features a tiled floor inlaid with marble and a concrete ceiling, but it is in a neglected condition.
