Description
The Walled Garden at Craigiehall is a roughly rectangular garden built in 1708, possibly designed by Alexander McGill. It features high, coped walls made of random rubble and brick, with a concave corner at the southwest. The garden is located to the northeast of Craigiehall House. The north wall has a red brick inner face and an infilled round-arched doorway with droved margins on the west elevation. There are several openings to the garden, including a segmental-arched red brick doorway in the north wall and two later 20th-century openings on the east wall, which are flanked by pairs of bull-faced, squared, and snecked sandstone gatepiers.
The gatepiers, likely also designed by Alexander McGill, are located at the southwest corner of the garden. They consist of a pair of rectangular sandstone gatepiers that stand between the walled garden and Craigiehall House. Each gatepier has square plinths, carved panels with floreate ribbon swags on the shafts, and corniced coping. One of the gatepiers features a ball finial.
